Progress

Progress is a Russian expendable unmanned freighter spacecraft that was derived from the Soyuz spacecraft. Progress is launched by the Soyuz rocket. The Progress freighter looks very much like the Soyuz spacecraft. It is made up of 3 modules. The pressurized forward module carries freight such as supplies for the crew, food, equipment and mail. The second module is a two-tank fuel tank. The third module is the propulsion module containing the spacecraft’s engines. The Progress is not designed for reentry and after undocking it fires it’s retro rockets and burns up in the atmosphere. The first Progress freighter was launched on January 20, 1978. There have been about 106 Progress flights since then and the Progress is still used to supply the International Space Station.
